I used the “Artful Closer” activity from the Thiagi group with 6 participants from my manufacturing systems course. The activity focused on defining a common experience, where students reflected, and through non-verbal communications, relayed that experience. I shared the theme of “your first day on campus” and solicited other suggestions from students. Other suggestions included “First day of class and where are you from (hometown).” Students were directed to draw/sketch their experiences without verbal communications, then interpret others drawing.

Students enjoyed the activity and shared some of the commonalities in their stories. For the most part, students were extremely creative in interpreting others drawing. It was fun, sharing and listening to all the interpretations. In the beginning one student suggested that I also participate in the activity. I was impressed with the genuine responses and the excitement from students sharing their experiences.

The activity is appropriate for AAC&U rubric on “Verbal and nonverbal Communication, and Attitude of Curiosity.” It is also applicable to all stages of the Intercultural Development Continuum and fosters friendship, teamwork, and emotional resilience.

All in all, The Artful Closer activity was a fun exercise that students enjoyed. It allowed students to share their experiences through the verbal interpretation of others. But more importantly, I believe that the activity encouraged mutual understanding even with differences in interpretations. One suggestion from the group was to time each phase of the activity and although the recommended duration was 30min, our 1 hr. duration was appropriate and no one felt rushed.
